Falls are one of the more common reasons older Australians end up needing extra support, and a fall can sometimes knock a person's confidence. The good news is that many falls can be made less likely with small, low-cost adjustments around the home. Here is where to focus.

Start with the floor

Many falls happen on level ground rather than on stairs, so the floor is a good place to begin:

  • Remove or secure loose rugs and mats with non-slip backing.
  • Keep walkways clear of cords, clutter and low furniture.
  • Wipe up spills straight away, especially in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Repair any uneven or lifting flooring without delay.

Light the way

Poor lighting can turn familiar rooms into hazards at night. Simple fixes make a noticeable difference:

  • Add nightlights along the path from the bedroom to the bathroom.
  • Place lamps or switches within easy reach of the bed.
  • Use brighter bulbs in stairwells and hallways.
  • Consider motion-sensor lights for hands-free guidance.
The goal is not to wrap the home in cotton wool. It is to remove the small, avoidable risks so confidence and independence can grow.

The bathroom: small space, higher risk

Wet, hard surfaces make bathrooms one of the higher-risk rooms in the house. You might consider:

  • Grab rails beside the toilet and inside the shower.
  • A non-slip mat inside and outside the shower.
  • A shower stool for anyone who tires easily when standing.
  • A raised toilet seat to reduce strain on knees and hips.

Stairs and steps

Where stairs cannot be avoided, you can make them as safe as possible:

  • Install sturdy handrails on both sides.
  • Mark step edges with high-contrast, non-slip strips.
  • Keep stairways well lit and completely clear.

Look after the body, too

Home changes are only part of the picture. Staying steady on your feet also comes down to strength, balance and good vision. Gentle exercise, an annual eye test, and a regular review of medications (some can cause dizziness) can all play a part.

Tip: Many of these changes cost very little and can be put in place in an afternoon. An in-home visit can help you work out which changes matter most for your particular home.

Reducing the risk of a fall is not only about avoiding injury. It can help you keep the confidence to live life the way you choose.
